The first references to the Carnival of Cento date back to the 17th century, thanks to frescoes of the famous painter of Cento, Gian Francesco Barbieri known as “Guercino“.
The festival maintained its status as a local event until the end of the eighties, when a real revolution began. In 1990, Ivano Manservisi, the organiser, allowed the carnival to make great steps forward and to recover the enthusiasm that had gradually diminished over the years. Today, the Carnival of Cento has attained an international importance, thanks also to its twinning relationship with the Carnival of Rio de Janeiro, the most famous in the world.
